Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a group of diverse medical and healthcare systems, practices, and products that are generally not considered to be part of conventional therapy. Some women choose CAM because they feel it reflects their values and beliefs; others choose CAM because conventional therapy dissatisfied or is not recommended for them.
Consumers in general believe that “natural” products are safe but that is not always the case. In fact, it’s not possible to have a treatment that provides benefits without the potential for some adverse effects.

Drugs and NHPs that are authorized for sale in Canada carry a Natural Product Number (NPN) on the label which signifies that these products have been assessed by Health Canada. Although Natural Health Products (NHPs) may not be as rigorously studied as prescription medications, some women prefer NHP as an option.
