SUMMARY:Finding Balance
DESCRIPTION:As you age\, bone mineral is gradually lost making the bones weaker and more prone to fracturing or breaking. In the years following menopause (the last menstrual period) the rate at which bone mineral is lost is faster than at any other time of your life. \n\nAt least 1 in 3 women will break a bone due to osteoporosis in their lifetime\nFragility fractures represent 80% of all fractures in women in postmenopause over the age of 50\nFractures from osteoporosis are more common than heart attack\, stroke and breast cancer combined\n\nNo single cause for osteoporosis has been identified but you should be aware of all the factors that contribute to strong and healthy bones\, and control those that you can\, such as nutrition and exercise. \nJoin me and my guest expert\, Kate Milne\, a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and the founder of Age Sister\, and learn why is so important for women in the menopause transition to have an exercise program\, the importance of balance and strength\, and Kate’s four top tips for healthy 50+ living. \n  \nLearn more about this event and register here. \n  \nKate Milne is the founder of Age Sister\, a company dedicated to providing mid-life women cutting-edge\, evidence-based information and programs to help them have their best “second act.” As a Clinical Exercise Physiologist\, she has devoted her entire career to helping people improve their health. In fact\, she started working in healthy living almost thirty years ago! \nFor the past 17 years\, she’s worked exclusively with older adults. Age Sister is a culmination of her research\, teaching\, and work to help women like you get stronger\, feel more confident\, and stay in control of your health as you get older. \nIt’s time we redefined what it means to be a 50+ woman. Kate can help you go from feeling like you don’t recognize your body anymore to feeling stronger\, confident\, and in charge of your aging. \n  \nLearn more about this event and register here.

SUMMARY:A woman-to-woman talk: Decoding the most confusing aisle of the drugstore
DESCRIPTION:Finding the most appropriate lubricant or moisturizer for you and your needs can seem like an impossible task. It doesn’t have to be. \nHave you ever stood in front of the feminine aisle in the drugstore and found it impossible to buy a lubricant or moisturizer because it’s so confusing? How do you know if you need a lubricant or a moisturizer? And what type of lubricant (water\, oil\, silicone) or moisturizer? Do they all do the same thing? \nNo\, they don’t! There are many options and in this talk you’ll learn the best product(s) for your situation and needs. \nNatural lubrication declines in postmenopause due to decreased estrogen\, leading to soreness\, burning and itching\, and painful sex. Discomfort while riding a bicycle\, sitting for long periods of time\, and wearing tight clothing are also common. \nUp to 84% of women experience these changes and challenges but only 4% receive help and support. \nUnfortunately\, many women don’t feel comfortable asking their physician or pharmacist for advice\, and so end up buying a less-than-ideal product – one that’s not appropriate\, not as effective\, or even irritating or harmful. \nIn this talk you’ll learn: \n\nHow to choose the most appropriate product—lubricant or moisturizer—for your individual vaginal and sexual wellness needs\nThe difference between lubricants and moisturizers and when to use one versus the other\nThe difference between the different types of lubs and moisturizers\nWhich products you should avoid\nThe best treatment when lubs and moisturizers don’t work\nWhen to see and what to ask your doctor/gynecologist\n\n  \nBonus – The first 15 registrants will receive samples of one of the best lubs available\, and definitely my favourite. \n  \nLearn more about this event and register here.\n  \nTeresa Isabel Dias BSc Pharm\, RPh\, NCMP is a pharmacist and a Menopause Practitioner certified by the North American Menopause Society. Many women experience physical\, emotional\, and mental challenges in midlife due to hormonal changes. Teresa provides education and support on symptom management for women at work and at home so that they feel like themselves again and enjoy a vibrant and productive life.

SUMMARY:The courage to thrive in life’s relationships
DESCRIPTION:The Courage To Thrive In Life’s Relationships. Tools To Maintain\, Revive\, Improve And Create New Relationships During A New Stage In Life. \nMenopause brings important changes in a woman’s life. Changes in ourselves bring changes in our relationships with others. \nThe courage to thrive in life’s relationships\nOur connection with others is only as strong as our communication skills. The science of positive psychology tells us that strong connections are essential for humans to thrive\, feel fulfilled and find joy. Some of us need many people\, others require only a handful. But we all need positive relationships in our personal and professional lives to succeed. How we communicate has the capacity to enhance or complicate our relationships. Miscommunication leads to confusion and frustration. \n• Are you ready to shift from walking on eggshells and feeling stuck to feeling authentic\, seen and connected? \n• Are you ready to stop feeling mad or not saying anything at all\, to being able to say what you want and being understood? \n• Are you ready to have more fulfilling\, peaceful and positive relationships? \nJoin us for an insightful hour of learning clear strategies on how to create and strengthen connections with others. \nLearn more about “The Courage To Thrive In Life’s Relationships” and register here. \nAbout my special guest\, Claudia Aronowitz\nClaudia Aronowitz\, MSc\, PCC\, CPCC is an accomplished professional coach and mediator\, certified by the International Coach Federation. Claudia is an engaging\, strategic thinker who\, prior to becoming a coach and mediator\, spent over 20 years as a leader in the health and not-for-profit sectors. Today\, as a Personal Development and Relationships Coach\, Claudia uses compassion\, insight and straightforward communication to support her clients through change and transition. \nAbout Teresa\nI am a registered pharmacist with over 25 years of professional experience in community pharmacy and drug information in Toronto. \nWhen I was in my late 40s my son asked me if I was bipolar. I wasn’t\, but the question made me look for answers to explain my behaviour. I had mood swings\, was irritable\, impatient\, angry\, and I was yelling at my kids (we always take it out on our loved ones). I found some answers and learned that I was in perimenopause. \nI realized that if I\, a healthcare professional\, wasn’t aware of the physical\, cognitive\, and emotional changes of the menopause transition then there must be a lot of other women who don’t know either. I decided I wanted to help other women understand and navigate the change\, so I became a NAMS* Certified Menopause Practitioner. \nI founded MenopausED\, a boutique-style virtual women’s health practice\, specialized in menopause\, to help women navigate the change so their life\, relationships\, and work can thrive! \nI have two grown sons and I’m addicted to swimming and nature! \n*NAMS-North American Menopause Society is North America’s leading non-profit organization dedicated to promoting women’s health and quality of life through the understanding of menopause and healthy aging. \n  \nLearn more about “The Courage To Thrive In Life’s Relationships” and register here.

In this hands-on practical session\, you will discover\, learn and experience how movement for personal wellness can nurture new levels of well-being in your work\, your life\, and the community around you. Personal connection is the key and that is difficult in these current times. See how movement can reduce stress & anxiety\, increase self-awareness\, mental health and nurture creativity. In a world full of right and wrongs\, when you explore YOUR way of moving\, the best part is “You Can’t Get it Wrong!” \nAngela Dacey – Colours and How it Affects our Daily Lives\nUsing psychology of colour and understanding how it affects our thoughts and feelings. \nTeresa Isabel Dias – Supplements & Vitamins for Optimum Health\nVitamins are essential for good health but you should get them through food rather than a supplement. SUMMARY:Vaginal Health and a Treatment Approach to Vulvovaginal Dryness: What a Pharmacist needs to know
DESCRIPTION:On January 14th\, 2021\, I will be presenting to the Metropolitan Toronto Pharmacists Association (MTPA) on “Vaginal Health and a Treatment Approach to Vulvovaginal Dryness: What a Pharmacist needs to know”. \nUp to 80% of women suffer from vaginal dryness but only about 4% get treatment. Doctors do not ask women about their sexual health\, and women don’t tell\, so many women suffer in silence. Vaginal discomfort affects a woman’s sexuality\, self-confidence and self-esteem\, upsets the relationship with her partner\, and decreases intimacy\, sexual desire\, and quality of life. \nIt’s not uncommon for women to confuse vaginal lubricants and vaginal moisturizers\, however it’s important to know the difference between these two products because they have very different but important benefits. \nPharmacists are well positioned to help midlife women reduce vulvovaginal dryness and atrophy due to low levels of estrogen\, such as in menopause. \nThe Metropolitan Toronto Pharmacists’ Association (MTPA) invites pharmacists  to attend  “Vaginal Health and a Treatment Approach to Vulvovaginal Dryness: What a Pharmacist Needs to Know”\, online\, on Thursday\, Jan 14th 2021\, at  7-8 pm EST. \nDescription: \nOverview of vulvovaginal dryness\, its causes\, signs and symptoms\, stepwise approach to relief and treatment including non-prescription options such as lubricants and moisturizers\, and prescription options such as local and oral hormone and non-hormone therapies. \nI\, Teresa Isabel Dias BSc Pharm\, RPh\, NCMP\, will be the speaker and these are my objectives for this session: \n\nProvide an overview of vulvovaginal dryness\, its causes and symptoms\nTreatment options and long-term management of vulvovaginal dryness\nExplain the differences between lubricants and moisturizers and why they are not interchangeable\nThe importance of discussing vaginal health with patients\n\nAttendance is free but you must register to get your access link here. \nI hope you can join us! \nLearn more about what I do here.

SUMMARY:Food and Mood - The gut-brain connection
DESCRIPTION:Women are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease. What you eat or don’t eat\, and your lifestyle\, affect your brain health and cognition. Join me and my guest speaker\, Gillian Bogden\, to learn all about Food and Mood – The gut-brain connection. \nMany of us know the role that food can play when it comes to stress\, anxiety\, and depression\, but aren’t necessarily familiar with why and how this happens. \nAlzheimer’s disease—which affects women twice as often as it affects men—is on the rise.  It may start in our brains 30-50 years before we see any symptoms\, and food is one of the main culprits. \nJoin me\, Teresa Isabel Dias\, founder of MenopausED\, and my guest speaker Gillian Bogden\, to learn how food and lifestyle literally lay the foundation for a healthy brain\, as well as how we could potentially stop Alzheimer’s in its tracks. \nMy Guest Speaker will be Gillian Bogden. As a holistic nutritionist\, health coach\, graduate of George Brown’s Culinary Arts Program\, and founder of gb wellness\, Gillian leverages food and lifestyle to redefine healthy aging. \nHaving battled her own food issues for years\, and influenced by her work with Jack.org\, a national mental health organization for youth in Canada\, and The Stop\, a Toronto-based food community centre\, Gillian realized she could make a profound difference in people’s lives through food. \nThese experiences led her to the Institute of Holistic Nutrition\, where she focused her studies on the research behind how food and lifestyle affect mental well-being\, chronic illnesses\, energy levels\, and overall health. \nGillian develops targeted one-on-one nutritional strategies for women in their prime (40’s\, 50’s and 60’s)\, looking to take their health to the next level. Her work has recently expanded to include Wellness at Work corporate presentations and gb wellness Walk & Talk. \nWhen not with clients\, you will find Gillian either in her kitchen\, walking the Toronto ravines\, or enjoying a meal with family and friends. \nThis is an ONLINE event via Zoom. Upon registration you will receive by email a Zoom link to join us. A reminder with the Zoom link will also be emailed to you on the day of the event. \nLearn more about this event “Food and Mood – The gut-brain connection” and register here. \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n  \nIf you would like to attend free then become a WHIM (Women’s Health In Midlife) Network member. DESCRIPTION:On November 2 I’ll be a guest speaker for my friend Rebeka Ly\, who together with her husband founded Addo Living\, talking about “What you should know about perimenopause but no one told you before”. \nEven though all women go through menopause most aren’t aware of what that entails and what to expect from this phase of life. Many women feel alone and isolated during the menopause transition. Each of us goes through menopause in our own way but we share many common experiences. \nDid you know: \n\n8 in 10 women experience hot flashes\n5 in 10 women experience vaginal dryness and pain with sex\n1 in 4 women contemplate quitting their jobs because of night sweats\, difficulty sleeping\, irritability\, anxiety\, or problems with concentration and memory.\n\nEven self-esteem and self-confidence can be negatively affected during the hormonal changes of midlife. \nYou are not alone! For every challenge that perimenopause poses there’s a solution.\nJoin us and learn what you should know about perimenopause: the menopause stages\, most common physical\, cognitive\, and emotional symptoms and most importantly\, how to make your (peri)menopause easier. \nLearn more and register here. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \n\nAre you… \n\nOver 40?\nCommitted to your health and wellbeing?\nInterested in learning more about your body and mind?\nReady to put yourself at the top of the list and look after yourself?\n\nThen you should consider becoming a member of the WHIM (Women’s Health In Midlife) Network.\nThe purpose of the WHIM (Women’s Health In Midlife) Network is to educate women about their health and wellbeing\, the life-affirming changes of midlife\, and healthy aging.  It’s the culmination of my 20+ years of experience working in women’s health with a focus on menopause. \nI help women cut through the clutter\, the myths\, and the folklore.  By providing truthful\, trusted advice\, I educate women and equip them to be their own health advocates. \nYou shouldn’t just survive the menopause transition\, you should thrive through it! \nCome put yourself first and celebrate your journey with our growing community.  Not yet a member? SUMMARY:Management of induced menopause in breast cancer survivors
DESCRIPTION:Many women with breast cancer suffer induced menopause due to certain treatments like chemotherapy\, radiation\, and medications used to treat and prevent breast cancer (tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors) that damage the ovaries and decrease estrogen levels at an earlier age. Women who undergo a hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries are put into induced menopause literally overnight. \nThe symptoms of induced menopause are usually severe\, long-lasting\, and life-altering. Symptoms can negatively affect your quality of life\, your romantic life\, and cause brain fog that makes you contemplate quitting your job.\nTo make things worse\, the medical community—e.g. physicians\, OB/GYNs\, nurses\, and counsellors—aren’t educated and well-versed in menopause so they fail to raise awareness\, provide education\, and support you. \nYou shouldn’t and you don’t have to suffer alone. There’s help! I can help.\nI know how difficult it is for women who survived cancer (or surgically had their ovaries removed) to live their lives in the throes of induced menopause.  I’ve volunteered at Gilda’s Club Greater Toronto\, I’ve witnessed women struggle with menopause symptoms\, and I was asked to offer education and support. \nIf you are a breast cancer survivor or had your ovaries removed then this workshop will help you manage the unwanted and unexpected consequences of your treatment on your hormones. SUMMARY:Brain Food by Dr Lisa Mosconi - WHIM Network Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Many women fear they have dementia when they start forgetting words and their kid’s names during the menopause transition.  That’s why I chose Brain Food by Dr Lisa Mosconi for the September WHIM (Women’s Health In Midlife) Network book club. \nDr. Lisa Mosconi is a neuroscientist researching how low levels of estrogen in menopause affect women’s brain and how it relates to dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. \nBrain Food by Dr Lisa Mosconi is available from the Toronto Public Library and Indigo. Join me to discuss a wealth of information about brain health and how to keep your brain healthy to minimize the risk of cognitive diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s. \nThe “whatyoumaycallit” phase is usually worst during perimenopause\, the years leading up to menopause (the last period)\, and usually improves in postmenopause. For most women\, knowing this is part of the hormonal changes of midlife and not a life-long sentence makes it easier to accept and live through. But just because it’s an expected phase let’s not be complacent\, let’s make sure you know what to do to optimize your brain function and health. \nWhat you eat is important for brain health — that’s why I chose Brain Food by Dr Lisa Mosconi. \nLearn more and register for this event here. \nAll WHIM (Women’s Health In Midlife) Network members attend FREE\, but everyone is welcome to attend this event. \nNot yet a member of the WHIM (Women’s Health In Midlife) Network?  Are you… \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver 40?\nCommitted to your health and wellbeing?\nInterested in learning more about your body and mind?\nReady to put yourself at the top of the list and look after yourself?\n\nThe purpose of the WHIM (Women’s Health In Midlife) Network is to educate women about their health and wellbeing\, the life-affirming changes of midlife\, and healthy aging.  It’s the culmination of my 20+ years of experience working in women’s health with a focus on menopause. \nI help women cut through the clutter\, the myths\, and the folklore.  By providing truthful\, trusted advice\, I educate women and equip them to be their own health advocates. \nCome put yourself first and celebrate your journey with our growing community.  Not yet a member? Become one here. \nLearn more and register for this event here. \n

SUMMARY:What are bioidentical hormones? Are they safe?
DESCRIPTION:What are bioidentical hormones? Are they safer than other therapies? There’s no official\, standardized definition for bioidentical hormones and this causes a lot of confusion and misinformation. \nBioidentical hormones are one form of therapy for menopausal symptoms. \nMost women believe that bioidentical hormones are natural\, made from plants\, therefore safe.  But there are no hormones in the wild that can be used by women straight from the plant source. \nThis workshop will provide information about bioidentical hormone therapy (BHT) to help you make educated choices about your menopause management. \nYou will learn: \n\nThe meaning of “bioidentical”\nWhat bioidentical hormone therapy (BHT) is\nHow BHT helps menopause symptoms\nThe effectiveness and safety of BHT\nThe difference between BHT products\nNatural versus synthetic therapies\nIf BHT is appropriate for you and your menopause symptoms\nWhether BHT is approved by Health Canada of the FDA\n\n  \nTime for Q&A! \nLearn more about this event “What are bioidentical hormones? Are they safer than other therapies?” and register here.\n\n  \nIf you can’t attend live and you’re a WHIM (Women’s Health In Midlife) Network member you’ll receive the recorded webinar to watch at your leisure. \nIf you’re not a WHIM Network member yet and would like to be (only $45 for the remainder of 2020!) sign up here. \nAre you… \n\nOver 40?\nCommitted to your health and wellbeing?\nInterested in learning more about your body and mind?\nReady to put yourself at the top of the list and look after yourself?\n\nThe purpose of the WHIM (Women’s Health In Midlife) Network is to educate women about their health and wellbeing\, the life-affirming changes of midlife\, and healthy aging. \nI help women cut through the clutter\, the myths\, and the folklore.  By providing truthful\, trusted advice\, I educate women and equip them to be their own health advocates. \nCome put yourself first and celebrate your journey with our growing community.
